The problem

The decline of the high street as a go-to destination has been ongoing for some time, with the shift away from the high street occurring since the 1960s (Local Government Association. 2022). The cost of living crisis and lack of exciting new developments in many areas will exacerbate this issue, all while the much more convenient online shopping continues to increase it’s share of all retail sales (ONS. 2022). Users desire an active, diverse city centre to draw them back in, yet many areas still focus on shopping over other experiences.

The solution

City Stage is a mobile app designed to encourage users to engage with their town and city centres. The project utilises AR and AI to offer users a gamified experience with walking tours with location based AR information, treasure hunts, and collectable artefacts based on city assets. These activities aim to drive footfall in and around the city centre, motivating users to explore and increase the likelihood of users engaging with physical retail. Additionally, the app utilises a rewards scheme (City points) to help with the cost of living crisis, and engage all users with affordable/free activities.
